HIGHLANDS - Essentials

The dictionary defines the word "essential" as follows: extremely important and necessary, very basic. Sound doctrine is not trivial or optional; it is extremely important (Titus 2:10). At Highlands, we practice an open book policy with our doctrine - we have nothing to hide. Therefore, it is our duty and joy to share with you the essential doctrines that are foundational to all that we believe and do.

We ONLY believe the Bible

It is not enough to merely believe the Bible; we must ONLY believe the Bible for it is the ONLY divine Book (Romans 3:4 & 2 Timothy 3:16). IT is comprised of ONLY 39 Old Testament books and 27 New Testament books. It portrays the Person and the work of Jesus Christ (John 5:39). It is fully inerrant, and it is the ONLY authority from which we receive all matters of doctrine and duty (Psalm 19:8 & 1 Peter 1:20).

"A Bible that's falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn't." - Charles H. Spurgeon

We believe in one God and one God ALONE

He ALONE is the Supreme Creator (Genesis 1:1). He ALONE is the God of our salvation (Jude 1:25). He ALONE exists in perfect unity as God the Father (1 Corinthians 8:6), God the Son (Hebrews 1:8) and God the Holy Spirit (Acts 5:4). He ALONE is perfect, just and true (Deuteronomy 32:4). He ALONE is the God of all gods (Deuteronomy 10:17), and he ALONE is worthy of our service, life and praise (Psalm 18:3).

We FULLY believe in the person and work of Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ is FULLY God (1 John 5:20) and FULLY man (Hebrews 7:26). He existed before His birth (John 17:5). He was born of the virgin Mary (Matthew 1:23). He died for the sins of the world (1 John 4:14). He rose triumphant on the third day (Luke 24:46). He ascended up to heaven (Acts 1:9). He can return for His church at any moment (1 Thessalonians 4:16). He will establish His kingdom on earth where He will reign supreme (Revelation 1:7), and one day He will FULLY judge both the saint and the sinner (2 Timothy 4:1).

"To grow in your passion for what Jesus has done, increase your understanding of what He has done." - C.J. Mahaney

We believe the Holy Spirit is the KEY that unlocks spiritual maturity

He is an equal member of the Trinity and is one with the Father and the Son (2 Corinthians 13:14). He convicts us of sin (John 16:8) and plays a KEY role in our salvation. He seals, guides, helps, teaches, sanctifies and indwells us and He is the KEY that opens the door to a fruitful life thus revealing we are truly saved (Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 3:16; Galatians 5:22-23).

"Holy Spirit with light divine, shine upon this heart of mine; chase the shades of night away, turn my darkness into day". - Andrew Reed

We believe the church began with the calling out of the twelve apostles by Jesus Christ and was empowered on the day of Pentecost. We believe the local church is God’s only institution to carry out His work today. We believe the local church is composed of members who have been saved and baptized according to the command of Christ, and have voluntarily united together for the purposes of worship, fellowship, service, and the Lord’s Table. We believe all true believers will be taken up at the Rapture, just prior to the Tribulation (Matthew 16:16-18; Acts 1:15; Acts 2:41-43; Acts 11:15; Acts 20:28; I Corinthians 15: 51-58; Ephesians 1:12-14; Ephesians 5:25-30; I Thessalonians 4:13-18; I Timothy 3:4-15).

"The living Church, though never neat, keeps God's world from complete disaster". Macleod

Mankind is born with an inherited sin nature

We believe every person will stand before God in judgment. Anyone who has not turned from his sin to faith in Jesus will be ETERNALLY separated from God in the Lake of Fire. Likewise, Satan and all his demons will face a final judgment and will be ETERNALLY condemned in the Lake of Fire. All believers will be saved from the wrath of God by their faith in the sacrifice of Jesus as their substitution, and will give an account for their works as God's children. They will be rewarded for their works of ETERNAL value and lose reward for those works of no ETERNAL value.

We EXCLUSIVELY believe salvation is received by grace through faith in Jesus

God's holiness demands justice for every sin we have committed, and no good works we do can erase the damage our sin has done. Our hope lies EXCLUSIVELY in the grace, love, and mercy of God. His invitation of salvation is open to anyone who by faith receives the gift of eternal life as they turn from their sins in order to accept salvation that is EXCLUSIVELY found in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
